Step by Step Candle Making
Many people enjoy highly scented candles as a gift simply because it is something they can use all of the time. Making a gift yourself always makes it feel personalized and special to the person you are giving it to. Not only is it a lot of fun to make your own candles, but it is a budget friendly craft as well.
Before you get started, take a few minutes to gather everything you need. This way you won’t need to worry about hot wax and not having what you need handy. Here are the supplies you will need: double boiler, wax, fragrance, dye, wick, pencil, and container for your candle. If you want to make your candles into shapes, you may also want to consider using a candle mold for making your candles. Now that you have all of your supplies in an easy to reach spot, you can start getting ready to melt the wax.
Melting the wax is the first step you will need to do. Wax comes typically in blocks or flakes, and either is fine for the initial melting. Some people will even use pieces of old candles to recycle what they already have. There are a few different ways to melt the wax initially, but most experienced candle makers rely on a double boiler because it is usually the easiest method to do.
Once the wax is melted, you will then want to mix in any optional dyes or fragrances. You can find a wide variety of dyes and fragrances from many different craft stores and suppliers. Be sure you read the directions on each, since they may have their own special set of instructions to follow.
After the wax is melted and the dye and fragrance is combined, the next step is to pour it into a jar. You will want to make sure you pour it in slowly and carefully, since it is very hot and may possibly burn you. After the wax is poured into the container, you can then gently poke the wick into it. One way to keep the wick in place while you wait for the wax to cool is to use a pencil. Simply tie one end of the wick to the pencil and then rest it across the jar.
Once you have let the wax cooled, your scented candles are finished and ready to be given as a gift. You can make the gift even more personalized by attaching decorative accents such as ribbon or a special gift tag. Everyone on your gift list will love the candles you’ve made, and you’ll love how easy and simple it was to do!
