Model Train Software on the Internet

I know, you would easily trade ten hours with a hammer and vice grip instead of one in front of your laptop.  It just feels inauthentic to practice model training with a PC.  Our dads didn’t have internet connections and we had great model trains without them.  But it’s the internet age, and there’s no reason why our computers can’t help us! For tracking down the rare model train you so loved as a kid the web was irreplaceable. So I don’t have to tell you that the internet has its uses for model train enthusiasts like us. I’ve discovered some excellent model train software.  Here’s the skinny:

Laying Out and Plotting Model Train Software:

Track visualizing model train software is one of the hidden treasures of the World Wide Web. Many programs let you to visualize the spatial drawbacks of your play area and use them to think through your track design ahead of time. Pre-set default track designs give you a good starting point that with minor alterations can be tailored to fit the individual idiosyncrasies of your area.  Some of the track planning software is even in 3-D! If your ability to imagine is wanting this is an useful aid.

Model Train Software to help detail your model train and its landscape:

Another great bit of software is one of these programs that allow you to print out and sometimes to even individualize the details for your trains and landscape. Decorating the face of one of your buildings so that it now presents the faded Goodyear logo is as hassle free as printing a set of mailing labels. To print the lettering in the style and size that you want, you just select the style you want, print it, and decal it on your locomotive. The sizes and styles can be specified to match the specifics of your locomotive’s size and historical context. Store bought decals will go the way of the dodo.  It opens up far more options for you to individualize your model train empire.

Model Train Software will soon be able to help you with signaling:

One of the most intriguing developing stories in the model train field is the current effort to create a Java based computer controlled signaling system.  Such a system would allow hobbyists to control their complex multi-train tracks and accessories from Windows or other common platforms on their computer.  This would take the mystery out of signaling for those that have never been able to fully grasp the more technical aspects of this part of model training.  Imagine that. Your computer now becomes the headquarters for your whole model train empire.  No more fussing with the signaling box. It should make things easier for me.

I can see that you at long last see a couple of redeemable features in your PC. But keep an eye out for more innovations. There is no ignoring the important effects that computers have had in the world| of real trains.
