Getting Started With N Scale Model Railroading

The N scale model train is among the smallest of the common sizes of model trains. These trains are named for the size of track they use; the “N” in N scale stands for nine, as in nine millimeters between the rails. It’s quite a bit smaller than HO or O scale model trains, but the smaller size makes it well suited for people who want to enjoy model railroading but have less space than is needed for many other popular scales. Since these trains are lighter and smaller, they offer more flexibility to hobbyists as well as needing less power to run.

Even though they are smaller, hobbyists do not have to sacrifice realism and detail when choosing N scale trains. However, they do have the advantage that it is easy to make more complex and elaborate layouts while using far less space than would be necessary for an equally complex O or HO scale layout. The smaller size of these trains makes them a good choice for building layouts which can be transported for public display with ease.

The N model railroad scale is small, but still popular enough to feature plenty of worthwhile figurines, buildings, vehicles and other worthwhile accessories. Just like the larger scales, detailed N scale scenery is available, with functional lights and sound simulations. There are even some steam locomotives that even have real steam boilers in them. The small size of the scale allows it to be more versatile in respect to power, too - hook into your existing supply, or use a battery.

You can fit N Model Railroad almost anywhere, including small apartments or rooms dedicated to other uses. Even extremely complex layouts will fit on a single sheet of plywood, and are easy to move around. You’ll find many examples of layouts in photographs and in online video. Beginners can get access to books and instructional videos that can be a huge help in putting together their layouts.

There are those who assume that because N scale trains are somewhat less popular than some of the other scales, there are too few accessories and other products available for hobbyists. Thankfully, this is not the way it is. You may not be able to find everything you’re looking for at your local shops, you can find just about anything you could possibly want online; there are even websites which are N scale specialists.

For the beginner, Bachman offers a variety of N model railroad sets, such as the White Christmass Express, which comes with the track for a 34″ by 24″ oval layout and features a steam locomotive with tender car and working headlight, plus two cars and a caboose. The power pack and speed controller are included, and lots of other sets and accessories can be purchased, too.
