Laying a plan for a successful knitting project requires you take a few vital steps. Though having the right knitting needles and the perfect yarn are important, they’re not the only aspect of making a beautiful knitted piece.  The right preparation and visualization are key to ending up with a gorgeous knitted garment.

Knitting patterns are abundant, especially online. That’s one reason that preparation is so important.  Oftentimes, people write patterns as best as they are able, but mistakes are inevitable. To be sure, these pattern writers are accomplished knitters, but they are not always professional-level pattern writers. For this reason, it is imperative that you read the pattern before casting on. If the pattern calls for felting, be sure to have the right felting supplies on hand.

Examine the photos of the fitted garment.  Will it flatter your body type?   The yarn you choose should result in the right drape. By thinking about these questions, it’s more likely you’ll end up with an attractive garment.  Additionally, the photos should make clear how many parts comprise the garment.   Not many projects get knitted in one piece. The instructions should have instructions for all parts of the garment.

The pattern details should include a minimal amount of information.   It’s risky to knit a pattern without knowing the gauge, or stitches per inch.   There is a chance your end result will be far too small or too large and unwieldy. There are so many different knitting stitches; you’re bound to come across one or more with which you’re unfamiliar. Using a gauge swatch to practice ahead of time will spare you the headache of ripping back a mistake. Charts included should be clear and easy to read.  In the case that something is unclear, just take the time to work everything out in your head before beginning.  Re-write the instructions yourself, if you must, you won’t be sorry!

When you’re preparing to start a new knitting project, especially one with complex instructions, it is always a good idea to have all the right tools on hand. Taking time to prepare adequately is critical to success.
