If you have ever had any doubt that humans are related to monkeys all you need to do is observe how young toddlers scramble and climb, even before they can walk properly.

Climbing, using all our limbs, is a skill which we, like monkeys, are built for. Enabling young children to develop their climbing skills, in a safe environment, is good for their development in many ways.

If children were to design their own outdoor play areas would they be anything like those that adults provide for them? Unlikely. Outdoor play spaces designed by children would most likely be filled with natural elements like trees to climb, gardens to investigate and hide in, water in ponds and streams, mud pools, sand pits, greens and games pitches. They would also be packed with all sorts of outdoor climbing toys, rock walls, rope ladders, climbing frames, treehouses and ladders on, no safety features such playbark etc.

Children need challenges and opportunities to develop their balance, self reliance and confidence. What do many children do when they encounter a climbable tree? They climb it. They jump from its branches. The more confident children will test themselves to see how far they can climb. They may even pester you to attach a Tarzan swing or a rope ladder. If you are lucky enough to have a suitable climbing tree in your garden you may be pressured into building a treehouse.

If you are not lucky enough to have a tree in your back garden you can still fulfil your child’s desire to climb with a well made outdoor climbing toy. Maybe a climbing frame or playset with a rope ladder attached, or even a rock wall, however sure to have a safe bark mulch or bark chippings undearneath incase of a fall.

As children play together outdoors they get the opportunity to develop many skills including their social and psychomotor skills. They will become increasingly familiar with their bodies, they will get stronger and hopefully gain an enthusiasm for exercise and outdoor activities.

So you’re into the little tikes, huh? Well, I can’t say I blame you. There is nothing so neat as little tiny trains. These tiny beauties really can make for a captivating model training experience. Another great thing about these little locomotives is that they are so tiny you can practically fit them anywhere. Let’s think a little bit about how we could use them in different spaces:

The smallest N scale dimensions:

It doesn’t get any smaller than this. See that little corner over there where you have that ficus, that’s enough space for it. If we do this layout though, we are really limited to just having the trains go around in a donut. We could maybe do a figure 8 or have two concentric circles, but that’s about it.

Pre-fab n scale scenic highlights:

N-scale is so small it is hard to work with. Craftwork is not really feasible for these little guys but don’t worry, several companies offer lines of pre-fab accessories. A good way of adding interest to your n-model railroad layout is to hand over your hard earned money for some of these and add them to your layout. Atlas is a good first step for these highlights.

Square setup:

If you can get just a small amount of extra space then you can make things a lot more complex. I’ve seen some pretty complex designs for a space of this size and larger. You will need a dedicated train table to do this, but if you place a lake at the middle of your track you can have the trains circling it and crossing over its tributary at the edges. It’s a lot more interesting than just a figure 8. I wouldn’t recommend trying it in a space any smaller than this however. The attempts I’ve seen to do this just don’t really succeed.

Add systematically to your track area:

Begin with a initial loop and connect, connect, connect. You could set the ball rolling with a simple 2’ x 4’ table and then add to it so that it is a 2’ by 8’ long island type layout and then turn it into an “L” shape, etc., etc.. You might extend a tributary so that it is in the middle and then have your track criss-cross it as it moves down the table. This is also a perfect way of adding variations to your landscape as you go. Little farmhouses or perhaps a chapel by the side of a hill can really make for a varied and captivating scenic experience.

N scale gives you the most choices for the least amount of space. Challenge yourself to let your determination overcome the spatial limitations of your space. If you find a particular landscape fascinating, realize it. The imaginative process is its own reward.

You want to know what’s really at the vanguard of model train hobby? What gauges do avid model trainers lust after? What gauge of toy locomotive do collectors go gaga for? Alright, here it is: s scale model railroads. Yeah, that’s right, s gauge? You don’t even know what size that is, do you? You couldn’t confirm for me if that is as big as g gauge locomotive or as small as an n scale, huh? Alright, well let me set you straight on the nitty-gritty on these before you start hearing about them in the news:

Here’s a blast from the past, these s gauge trains are “American Flyers”:

This style of locomotives has been enshrined in the hall of fame of model trains. Nostalgia explains a lot. American Flyer’s s scale trains had their hey-day right after the Big One when the baby boomers were starting to sprout up. This was in huge part an attempt to challenge Lionel who was the top dog through the 50’s. S gauge is an “inbetween” gauge, way bigger than HO but smaller than Lionel’s O. Real world trains are 64 times huger than s gauge toys whereas real world trains are 48 times the size of Lionel’s O. These are still pretty hefty locomotives but not so much so that you would have to have them only outside. These locomotives are a lot of fun to color and decal.

You don’t stumble across s gauge much these days:

Since American Flyer in effect created s scale and then went out of business just a few years after, you don’t run across it much. American Flyers are simply the only type of locomotives that were mass produced in this gauge and even American Flyers were only produced in this gauge for a brief period just after the Big One. That means there are not that many of them. Because of the law of supply and demand, American Flyers short life span has raised the demand for their parts and sets. This has made American Flyer the Holy Grail of model trains for many hobbyists.

American Flyers are about to hit the model train market again:

American Flyer’s adversary Lionel bought them out in the 60’s and is now looking to revitalize both brands by releasing the vintage 1950’s models that continue to be so loved by hobbyists. The fantastic success of these releases has driven Lionel to commit to reproduce the s scale trains that avid fans are so in love with. It might not be long before we have to make room for s gauge as yet another common size in the model training world.

So if you want to get in front of this wave, now’s the time. If you want to say “I told you so” to your model train chums you should jump in now. Get one of these flap jacks while they’re still hot. Remember when I told you about this little coffee house called Starbuck’s. Not only that, American Flyer and s gauge just rock even if nobody were into them.

Pop quiz: what are the three most widely recognized American toy trains makers? I bet you’ll remember them when I remind you. The answer is: “Lionel, American Flyer and Bachmann Trains”. You may not have known that Bachmann was American, but it sure is. And American Flyer was a creator not just a line of trains. Here’s a little bit more about these American model train makers that you might find compelling:

Lionel Trains:

Until the fifties Lionel was the front runner in the model training world. Thanks to perfect marketing Lionel out flanked its competitors. It was Lionel’s marketing campaign that placed model train tracks around Christmas trees. Their O [scale|gauge] trains which were one 48th the size of [regular|real world|actual] [trains|locomotives] ruled the roast up until the 1950’s when HO scale trains started to take over the market. Lionel began to have problems in the 1960’s and went through several rebirths before coming back in it current incarnation. Now Lionel is making a comeback, again offering its O scale and some G scale models to a new audience of model train hobbyists. We are happy to have them and their big glorious trains.

American Flyer:

We mostly recognize American Flyer trains as a line of trains now, but they were their own manufacturer until 1966 when they were bought out by Lionel. American Flyer was born in Chicago around 1900. They were bought out by A C Gilbert who also popularized the famous “erector sets” of the early 20thcentury. American Flyer was the most robust national competitor to Lionel and its trains are perhaps the most popular collectible trains to this day. After World War II the company slowly failed as its trains switched to S scale. When Lionel bought American Flyer in 1966, they kept and refurbished much of the equipment. Lionel’s newly produced American Flyer trains are a great success since the turn of the millennium.

Bachmann Industries:

This is actually the oldest of the three companies, started way back in the 1830s but was the the latest of the three to get into the toy train business. Descendants of the original founders of the company, the Carlisle’s and the Bachmann’s, are still on the company board, though the company is now based in China, not in Philadelphia. Bachmann rose up after WWII by marketing starter kits to a middle class audience. Their success continues to this day and they remain one the leaders in HO model trains in the world.

We now have more choices than ever before when it comes to the model train hobby. The web has really transformed the model training hobby into a buyer’s market. You can choose from almost any scale and from any era of train at just the touch of button. The three American pioneers that I just mentioned can now be fully appreciated for what they are: American jewels.

Patterning is probably the toughest part of beadcraft to do well. Our brains are hard-wired to seek out patterns in the world around us, and to organize data into small bits that are easy to recognize. This is the reason, for example, that things like phone numbers and social security numbers are broken down into small segments, separated by dashes. Simply put, they are easier to remember that way.

One big mistake that a novice beader will often make is simply to use “whatever is on hand” and attempt to design something workable from that. This CAN produce beautiful results (especially if supplies are plentiful), but often results in designs that are haphazard in their appearance. Randomness. Don’t take that chance. Spend some time and learn the art of patterning.

By all means, feel free to experiment! Part of the fun of the hobby lies in trying new and unusual things and messing around with unusual bead craft ideas! But even if you dabble in chaos and randomness, DO, at some point, give serious consideration to studying the art of patterning. When you do, you might find yourself spending hours, if not days pouring over and experimenting with the possibilities till you hit upon something that’s really striking and memorable. Do not, however, mistake complexity for a good design. At the end of the day, the most elegant answer is often the simplest. Consider for instance, the classic strand of pearls. That’s about the simplest pattern you could ask for, and yet it is timeless!

Some people (both novices and veterans in the bead craft world) spend hours upon hours experimenting with arrangements until they hit upon something that is truly compelling. More common though, especially to those new to beadwork, is a sense of intimidation. This is unfortunate, but the overwhelming majority of hobbyists will outgrow that fear as they gain more bead craft experience. Still, if you have recently taken up beadwork as a hobby and find yourself struggling with the difficulty of developing your own patterns, you can find a number of sites on the web offering free beading projects and pattern ideas and examples. Make use of these in your designs, and before very long, you’ll probably find yourself thinking, “I like this pattern, but wouldn’t it be neat if…” and almost before you know it, you’ll be on your way to creating your own, wholly unique bead craft design.

The mechanics of bead craft are simple. The patterning…less so. It’s a learned skill and it can be a little intimidating. Do yourself a favor though, and if you’re not coming up with ideas on your own, or if you’re a little intimidated by the though of having to, check out on or offline resources for inspirations for beading ideas. You’ll be glad you did, and from there, well on your way to mastering the fine art of patterning!

Kids and teens seem to be increasingly interested in just watching movies, television shows, and playing video games. They also seem to spend much of their time online. All of this sedentary activity prevents them from finding their talents and improving their minds. This article will hopefully be able to help you find something creative to do with your kids and get them off the couch.

Talk to your kids about the things they enjoy or dream of being able to do. Many kids hope to do certain things, like play an instrument or dance, but do not talk about it openly. When talking to your child, be very open and encouraging. Talk to them in a very positive manner.

Playing an instrument is a popular creative activity for kids. Lots of kids wish they could play an instrument, such as the guitar. If you are buying your child a guitar, take them on the shopping trip with you. He or she needs to like the guitar you purchase and find it comfortable to play. You also need to buy picks, a tuner, extra strings, and a strap.

If your child likes guitars that have a big and deep sound, you might want to buy a Dreadnought acoustic guitar. These guitars are generally bigger than others, but they have a beautiful sound full of bass. However, this guitar may not be suitable for very small children.

There are many guitar brands to choose from, but you usually can’t go wrong with an Alvarez acoustic guitar. These guitars sound great and come in many shapes and sizes, which means you should be able to find one you like the sound and feel of.

For kids who do not want to play an instrument, you try creating a scrapbook together. Scrapbook pages are easy to find in stores or you can make your own from things around the house. Kids will love putting their memories in a book that they get to decorate.

For children who enjoy writing and drawing, you might want to buy a computer program that allows them to do this. This way, they can be creative and learn useful new skills.

Getting your children off the sofa can be hard, but it is possible. Talk to them about what they want to do and then help them achieve it.

Looking for a new hobby to pour your time and creativity into? Then scrapbooking may be the one you’re looking for. Evidently, it’s become one of the most popular crafts nowadays. It helps you organize your photographs, at the same time employ your artistic flair.

But you might notice that a huge part of arts and crafts shops is devoted for scrapbookers. And you might notice that the hobby can get very expensive too. For sure you have heard of hardcore scrapbookers who spend a fortune for the craft.

However, this should not be a cause of alarm and steering clear of the hobby. You can try making a scrapbook even without spending a huge amount of money for it, especially for a newcomer like yourself. You can come up with a fantastic album by using materials found in the home. And of course by using your creativity as well.

Let’s begin with scrapbooking papers. Some hardcore scrapbookers will readily pay for expensive sheets where their creativity will be spread all over. However, you can use folders or construction papers used by your kids for school projects. Never mind they may have writings or drawings on them. Photos and other decorative elements may cover them up.

Regarding the cover of the pages, you can simply fashion one out of used cartons or boxes. Or you may rip off unused contents of a binder, and use it as a makeshift album cover. Throw in lots of love and creativity in designing the cover to make it really interesting-looking. You’ll save a lot of money if you skip buying ready-to-use scrapbook albums.

Where you will get your embellishments is practically unlimited. But you can start with cutting colorful designs out of the glossy pages of magazines. Decorations in greeting cards will also make for great scrapbook pages decorations. But be careful where you cut out your designs from. Relatives and friends will surely find your works daunting, regardless how artistically executed, should they see stuff from erotic comics and the likes.

To add character to the pages of your scrapbook, you can paste strips of unused wallpapers, or even colorful fabrics. You may also include mementos that will set the mood for each page. For instance, you may use some of the giveaways during your child’s birthday party. Or you may use flat shells or dried leaves taken from your tropical paradise getaway.

As with scrapbooking tools, there are so many of them, and some of them can cost quite a lot. But the truth is you can do without them. That is, if you know how to be resourceful and inventive. As long as you have a reliable pair of scissors and a cutter, then you’ll be just fine.

Making a scrapbook as a hobby need not be expensive. While it’s okay to look at works of others online for ideas, it pays to be innovative. After all, everyone will appreciate your creations more when they know every single thing about it is a product of your creativeness.

It’s really difficult these days to persuade kids to be involved in our traditions. If it doesn’t connect to the power grid and add to the monthly electrical cost, lots of kids are just not that into it. This is after all the internet age and if a youngster isn’t perusing three things at once he feels like he is slacking. But, as you know, history is really a useful thing for them be familiar with. It just helps knowing the stories of how things came to be. If we’re going to remain a successful democracy we really need to instill some of our vibrant traditions to them. So how can we overcome their resistance to learning about the dead bones of the past? There are lots of ways, but one particularly good way is through toy trains. Yes. Yeah, historic model locomotives carry a rich history with them but don’t burden us with feeling that we are being educated. Here’s how to teach the past with toy trains:

Use trains as a subtle vehicle for the past:

Try to make your lay out period and location authentic. For example, let’s say that you choose to display the American Southwest in the period just after the Civil War. You can feign ignorance and get your kids to “help” you figure out what would make for correct scenic details to your setup. Imagine stringing up a long row of telegraph poles next to your track to indicate the communications system of the time. A ghost town that failed to capitalize on the railroad because it didn’t get a stop might be shown tantalizingly close to the track. Maybe even have a few washed out prospectors still panning for gold in the nearby stream.

Spice up the tired old school report by swapping in a model train setup instead:

Diorama and similar craft projects are fine but if you’ve already gotten your child into model locomotives why not take advantage of his or her hobby to really impress at his next school presentation. You will need to set it up on a portable display table and possibly help your child bring it in on the day that it is due, but the combination of historic detail and the fascination that such trains inspire simply by themselves are likely to really go over well. Just imagine, for example, adding a model locomotive display to your child’s essay on Jesse James. As your period specific locomotive rounds the curve there are Jesse and his whole gang just waiting to pounce and continue his wrong headed crusade. It’s your youngster though, who will be stealing that A right out of his teacher’s grade book!

Visit a model train Museum:

If you’re anywhere in the American West you are never far from historical train sites and museums where toy locomotives are often featured. This can be a lot of fun and be very educational as well. In some places, toy locomotive societies often put on toy train events.. Just do an internet search and you are sure to come into contact with your local toy train society.

Whatever you choose to do, you will discover that model trains are a door to the past even if you don’t explicitly use them as such. Even if you just do model training without even considering the educational possibilities you will inevitably kindle a greater sense of historical knowledge simply by handling these little mechanical doorways to the past.
